UbuntuPhoneCalled Ubuntu for Phones, the OS brings along a new user interface utilizing all four sides of a typical touchscreen smartphone.

Canonical, the company behind the Ubuntu, has quietly introduced a new version of the operating system. Called Ubuntu for Phones, the new operating system is targeted towards entry level phones and high-end smartphones.

The Ubuntu for Phones brings a unique new user interface aimed to make use of all four sides on a typical touchscreen smartphone. Loaded with several modern features, the Ubuntu for Phones will also drive its own App Ecosystem comprising of native as well as HTML5 based web apps.

THE NEW FEATURES:

* Phone with the heart of a PC .

High-end smartphones have a brain as powerful as ultra-light laptops. Ubuntu uniquely enables   a new category of convergence device – phones that dock to become full PCs and thin clients – enabling enterprise IT departments to replace phones, thin clients and laptops with a single secure corporate device.

* Customize to your needs.

Operators have room to enhance Ubuntu with their own services, content, apps and branding without breaking compatibility with the broader Ubuntu app ecosystem. Canonical engages with OEMs and operators to enable them to ship phones with custom capabilities, or offer exclusive items for their audience.

*The developer’s favorite OS.

  • Existing web properties can be installed on the Ubuntu phone, where they can run as web apps independent of the browser, with full access to the system just like native apps.
  • The standard Android development environment is Ubuntu.
  • HTML5 is fully supported but Ubuntu is not limited to HTML5. To use the full power of the hardware, you can develop native apps, using OpenGL and QML, with C or C++ and JavaScript compiled for extra performance.
  • Major game developers like EA, Valve and Unity Technologies are now committing to Ubuntu.

*Specifications

So what sort of guts does it take to run the phone OS? Or, to put it another way, how ‘lean’ is ‘lean’?

This is where things get interesting.

A “low end” Ubuntu Phone will require, at a minimum:

  • Dual-core A9 ARM Processor
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 4GB Flash Storage + SD
  • 800×400 WVGA Screen
  • Multi-touch

To run the phone with ‘convergence’ enabled (a fancy way of saying ‘you can dock it and it will run a full desktop) the requirements are a bit higher:

  • Quad-core A9 ARM Processor
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 32GB Flash + SD
  • Minimum of 720p screen resolution
  • Multi-touch
